Studies show that up to 30% of ostomates are likely to develop a hernia after stoma surgery due to the weakness in the muscle wall, regardless of the type of surgery, the siting of the stoma or the stoma type*. However, use of a comfortable, well fitted support garment will greatly reduce the risk.

Eakin Support Belts™ have been specifically designed to provide full and complete abdominal support for prevention and treatment of parastomal hernias.

Please note: Assessment and measurement for a Support Belt™ should be carried out by a Stoma Care Nurse.

  • Specifically designed without “a hole” as this provides best support and hides the pouch
  • Adjustable Velcro™ closure to allow easy fitting
  • Neutral tone fabric and slim line fit for discretion
  • Washable fabric
  • Available in various sizes.

When should I use an Eakin Stoma Support Belt™?

  • To provide abdominal support during periods of physical activity such as walking, gardening, lifting, sports, housework, etc
  • For treatment of a parastomal hernia during periods of physical activity
  • For prevention of a parastomal hernia during physical activity, especially In the first few months after surgery
  • Support Belts™ should not be used while sleeping or lying down
  • The nurse will advise how long the Support Belt™ should be worn for.

Choosing the Correct Size

  1. Lie flat on a firm surface and allow the hernia to reduce or settle back to its normal position, making your abdomen as flat as possible.
  2. Using a tape measure wrapped carefully around your abdomen take a firm measurement over the area of the hernia and stoma.
  3. Note this measurement and compare it with the list of sizes available (you will find the list of sizes in the Support Belts™ brochure available in the Downloads tab).
  4. If in doubt or between sizes, select the smaller size.
  5. Choose between the 20cm width or 26cm width belt depending on your individual physical and support needs.
